7 Best AI Mode Trackers in 2026

ai-mode-trackers

TL;DR: AI Mode trackers run repeatable prompts through Google AI Mode and other answer engines, then record brand mentions, cited URLs, competitor presence, sentiment, and related visibility metrics. They complement traditional rank tracking rather than replace it.

For most small teams, a focused tool such as OtterlyAI or SE Ranking is the right starting point. Choose Semrush or Ahrefs if you already pay for that ecosystem, and consider Peec AI or Profound when multi-project or enterprise requirements justify the added complexity. Check current platform coverage and pricing on each official vendor page before purchasing.

Introduction

You search your brand name in Google AI Mode, then try the same thing in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Each platform returns a different answer. Sometimes your brand appears. Sometimes a competitor takes the only citation. Sometimes neither mentions you at all.

Traditional rank tracking does not capture any of that. It tells you where a page sits on a results page. It does not tell you whether a generated answer mentions your brand, cites your URL, describes you favorably, or surfaces a competitor instead.

That measurement gap is exactly what AI mode trackers exist to close. This guide compares seven tools by prompt control, engine coverage, citation detail, plan limits, and usefulness of the data, not by the number of logos on a feature page.

Pricing and feature availability in this article were checked on October, 2026. Vendors can change plans, limits, supported platforms, and pricing after that date. Verify the official vendor page before purchasing.

What Is an AI Mode Tracker?

An AI Mode tracker is a tool that runs a defined set of prompts through one or more AI-powered search or answer platforms, then records how a brand appears in the generated response.

The recorded data typically includes whether the brand was mentioned, whether a URL was cited, where competitors appeared, and how the brand was described.

These tools sit alongside traditional SEO rank trackers rather than replacing them. Rank tracking tells you where a page ranks in standard search results. AI visibility tracking tells you whether and how a brand appears inside a conversational AI answer, which is a different measurement layer entirely.

The category connects to two related practices: generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO). Both focus on making content more likely to be cited or summarized favorably by AI systems.

An AI Mode tracker is the measurement tool that shows whether those efforts are working.

AI Mode vs. AI Overviews vs. ChatGPT and Perplexity

Many tool roundups combine Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews into a single “Google” checkbox. That conflation matters when evaluating tool coverage because they are distinct surfaces with different behaviors.

PlatformWhat it isInteraction typeWhere it appears
Google AI ModeDedicated conversational search interface with follow-up capabilityMulti-turn dialogueSeparate Google Search tab
Google AI OverviewsBrief AI summary embedded above standard search resultsSingle-turn summaryTop of standard Google SERP
ChatGPTStandalone AI assistant with web search capabilityConversationalchat.openai.com

AI Mode vs AI Overviews platform comparison cards

A tool that tracks Google AI Overviews may not track Google AI Mode. When evaluating any tracker, require separate confirmation for each surface rather than accepting a combined “Google AI” label.

What AI Mode Trackers Actually Measure

Metric definitions vary by vendor. Here is what each term typically means, though the exact calculation differs across platforms:

  • Mention: The brand name or a close variant appears anywhere in the generated answer, but may not include a clickable link.
  • Citation / cited URL: A specific page URL is linked inside the AI response, giving the source direct referral credit.
  • Position: The order in which a brand appears relative to other mentions in the same answer. Vendors define this differently, so compare methodology rather than numbers across tools.
  • Sentiment: A classification of whether the brand is described positively, neutrally, or negatively in the answer.
  • Share of voice: The percentage of tracked prompts in which the brand appears relative to competitors. Vendor calculations vary significantly.
  • Prompt: The exact query sent to the AI engine. Prompt wording, location, language, and device all affect the response.
  • Refresh frequency: How often the tool re-runs prompts to capture updated AI responses. Daily, weekly, or custom schedules are common.
  • Cited URL: The specific page linked by the AI engine. This is the most actionable data point because it identifies which content is earning placement.

What to Look for in an AI Mode Tracker

Before comparing tools, define what you need the data to do. A tracker earns its place when it can show what changed, why it matters, and which page or source should be reviewed next. Use this checklist when evaluating any AI search visibility tool:

  • Does it track Google AI Mode separately from Google AI Overviews?
  • Can you define and run your own exact prompts?
  • Does it record cited URLs at the page level, not just domain level?
  • Can you monitor competitor brand mentions within the same prompt set?
  • Do you control the location, language, and device settings?
  • How often does it refresh prompt results, and does that cadence apply to your plan tier?
  • What reporting and export options are available?
  • Is the pricing transparent, including add-on costs for extra engines or prompts?
  • Can a non-technical user set up a project without developer support?

Engine coverage, prompt limits, and location controls must all be read together. A low entry price that excludes Google AI Mode, limits you to 15 prompts, and omits location controls is a different product than it first appears.

Does the Tool Track Your Exact Prompts?

Not all trackers run your specific prompts. Some use a modeled or shared prompt index, running a predefined set of industry-relevant queries and estimating brand visibility from the results.

Tracking approachHow it worksBest forLimitation
Custom prompt executionRuns your exact prompt text through the AI engineTeams with defined buyer journeys and specific questionsMore expensive per query; requires prompt discipline
Shared/modeled indexUses a predefined prompt set to estimate category visibilityDiscovery research and broad benchmarkingMay not reflect the specific prompts your buyers use
Manual checksYou run prompts directly and log the results in a spreadsheetZero-budget testingNo automation, no history, high time cost

For repeatable measurement, custom prompt execution is the more useful approach. It preserves the exact wording, location, and settings so future comparisons remain meaningful.

Can It Show Cited URLs and Competitor Gaps?

Citation data is where AI visibility tracking becomes actionable. Look for a tool that surfaces:

  • The exact page URLs cited in each AI response, not just the root domain
  • Prompts where a competitor was cited but your brand was not
  • Brand mentions in the response text that are not accompanied by a link
  • Changes in cited URLs over time, especially after a content update
  • Sentiment context around any mention or citation

A citation gap points to a specific content action: a page update, a new reference piece, a structured explanation, a digital PR effort, or a technical crawlability check. The tracker itself does not diagnose the cause. The data is directional evidence, not proof of causation.

Best AI Mode Trackers to Consider

ai-mode-trackers-best-options-compared

The seven tools below are editorial comparisons based on official documentation and publicly available information. No hands-on test across all seven was completed for this article.

Official documentation indicates the features and pricing listed. Verify every detail on the vendor’s live page before purchasing.

1. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Best fit for teams already using Semrush who want AI visibility connected to broader SEO and content research workflows.

Official documentation lists the Base plan at $99 per month per domain (billed annually), with 25 custom prompts, AI visibility reports, competitor analysis, and prompt research across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, and Perplexity. The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit pricing page shows current plan details.

Strength: Deep integration with Semrush’s existing keyword, content, and site audit tools means AI visibility data sits alongside familiar SEO workflows.

Limitation: 25 custom prompts is a tight limit for teams with multiple products or audience segments. Additional prompt capacity requires a higher plan. If you do not already use Semrush for SEO, the combined cost may exceed what a standalone AI tracker would cost.

Skip if: You need only lightweight AI Mode monitoring and do not use Semrush’s broader SEO toolkit.

2. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Best fit for existing Ahrefs subscribers or teams that need broad AI visibility research alongside custom prompt monitoring.

Ahrefs documents Brand Radar as covering AI visibility research, custom prompts, competitor benchmarking, cited pages, and related visibility across web, YouTube, Reddit, and TikTok. The Ahrefs pricing page lists Brand Radar AI starting from $199 per month for a single index and an all-platform option at $699 per month. Custom prompt packages are listed separately.

Strength: Combines AI visibility with Ahrefs’ established backlink, keyword, and content research data in one interface.

Limitation: Custom prompt access and index selection can require additional spend beyond the base Brand Radar price. Plan interpretation requires careful reading of the pricing page. The Ahrefs Help Center documents coverage details.

Skip if: You do not use Ahrefs for SEO and the standalone Brand Radar pricing exceeds your budget for AI visibility alone.

3. SE Ranking AI Search and SE Visible

Best fit for teams that want AI visibility monitoring inside an existing SEO workflow or agencies that need strategic brand reporting at a competitive price point.

SE Ranking offers two related products. The AI Search add-on inside SE Ranking covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, with packages of 200, 450, and 1,000 checks. The SE Ranking Knowledge Base documents check volumes and pricing. SE Visible is a separate product starting from $99 per month, designed for strategic brand-level AI visibility reporting across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, Perplexity, and AI Overviews.

Strength: Two distinct products let teams choose between query-level prompt checks and broader brand intelligence reporting without paying for one when they need the other.

Limitation: The distinction between checks, prompts, projects, and engines across two products creates comparison complexity. Read the documentation carefully before treating SE Ranking and SE Visible as equivalent tools.

Skip if: You need a single unified platform and want to avoid managing two separate product relationships.

4. OtterlyAI

Best fit for solo marketers and small teams looking for a lower-cost starting point for AI visibility monitoring without enterprise complexity.

The OtterlyAI pricing page lists a Lite plan at $29 per month with 15 search prompts and four included engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Claude are listed as extra add-ons.

Strength: The entry price is the lowest on this list, making it accessible for bloggers, small businesses, and teams testing AI visibility tracking before committing to a larger platform.

Limitation: 15 prompts per month is a real constraint for teams with multiple products, audiences, or locations. Add-on engine costs for Google AI Mode and Gemini can raise the total price significantly above the headline rate. The OtterlyAI features page details engine coverage.

Skip if: Your priority is Google AI Mode coverage at the entry tier without paying engine add-on fees, or you need more than 15 prompts per month.

5. Peec AI

Best fit for teams that need prompt-level analytics, competitor benchmarking, source analysis, and multi-project workflows in a specialist AI visibility platform.

The Peec AI product page describes visibility tracking, position measurement, sentiment analysis, share of voice, competitor comparison, prompt tracking, and cited-source analysis. Plan structures on the Peec AI pricing page are based on prompts, models, projects, countries, and tracking frequency.

Strength: Detailed prompt-level reporting and source analysis give content teams specific evidence about which pages are being cited and which competitors are appearing in their place.

Limitation: Verify exact plan prices, included models, and add-ons on the live pricing page before quoting them. Some price rendering may depend on account context.

Skip if: You need only a simple mention count and do not plan to act on citation-level or competitor-gap data.

6. Profound

Best fit for larger marketing teams and agencies requiring structured answer-engine intelligence, integrations, and workflow depth across multiple brands or clients.

The Profound pricing page lists a Starter plan at $99 per month (billed annually) with ChatGPT tracking and 50 prompts, a Growth plan at $399 per month (billed annually) with three answer engines and 100 prompts, and custom Enterprise plans with broader coverage.

Strength: Profound is built around structured answer-engine intelligence with a methodology that captures browser-rendered AI responses rather than relying solely on model APIs, which can produce more representative results.

Limitation: Entry plans cover only ChatGPT and limit prompts to 50, which may be too restrictive for teams needing Google AI Mode, Perplexity, or Gemini coverage alongside ChatGPT from the start. Moving to Growth adds significant cost.

Skip if: You are a small team or blogger who does not need multi-engine enterprise depth at this stage.

7. Keyword.com AI Visibility Tracking

Best fit for teams that want traditional SERP rank tracking and AI visibility data in one auditable workflow without switching platforms.

Keyword.com documents execution-based tracking in which each tracked configuration includes the prompt, AI engine, location, frequency, and settings. The system records mentions, position, citations, and sentiment across repeated runs. The Keyword.com support documentation describes the methodology and metric definitions. Public pricing was not confirmed during research for this article.

Strength: Combining traditional keyword rank tracking with AI visibility in a single platform reduces the number of tools a team needs to manage and keeps reporting in one place.

Limitation: Public pricing was not confirmed at the time of writing. Contact Keyword.com directly for current plan pricing before budgeting. The Keyword.com API documentation covers reporting and engine-level data access.

Skip if: You need transparent public pricing before even starting an evaluation conversation.

How I Evaluated These AI Mode Trackers

This article is an editorial comparison based on official vendor documentation, publicly available pricing pages, and official product support resources.

No hands-on test was completed across all seven tools (except Semrush) using a documented prompt set, so the word “tested” does not appear in the tool cards and no numeric scores are assigned.

The evaluation framework weighted the following criteria:

  • Platform and AI Mode fit (25%): Does the tool separately track Google AI Mode, not just Google AI Overviews?
  • Prompt reproducibility (20%): Can you define and re-run exact prompts with consistent location and language settings?
  • Citation and URL evidence (15%): Does the tool surface cited page URLs and distinguish a mention from a citation?
  • Competitor analysis (15%): Can you identify prompts where a competitor appears but your brand does not?
  • Reporting and exports (10%): Are data exports, API access, or dashboard sharing available?
  • Cost transparency (10%): Is pricing public, and do add-on costs for engines and prompts appear clearly?
  • Ease of use (5%): Can a non-technical user set up a project without developer assistance?

Any tool whose Google AI Mode coverage, pricing, or core metric definitions could not be confirmed on an official page was noted with a disclosure rather than excluded without explanation. No independent accuracy benchmark was found that would justify declaring one vendor more accurate than another.

How to Choose the Right Tool for Your Team

The right tool depends on your prompt volume, required platforms, team size, reporting needs, and ability to act on citation data. Use these guidelines to match your situation:

AI mode tracker tool selection decision framework

Best Starting Point for Bloggers and Small Teams

Prioritize low setup complexity, transparent pricing, custom prompt tracking, and actionable citation data over enterprise reporting features.

OtterlyAI’s $29/month entry plan is the most accessible option on this list for bloggers and solo content creators, though the 15-prompt limit and add-on cost for Google AI Mode are real constraints to factor in.

SE Ranking’s AI Search add-on is a strong alternative if you already use SE Ranking for keyword and rank tracking. The combination keeps AI visibility inside a familiar workflow without adding another subscription.

Best Fit for Agencies and Multi-Brand Teams

Agencies should prioritize project separation, client reporting, export options, user access controls, and scalable prompt economics.

SE Visible and Profound are the two options on this list designed with multi-client workflows in mind. Semrush and Ahrefs are strong choices for agencies already embedded in those ecosystems.

Confirm that the tool’s project limit, user seat structure, and export format (CSV, API, Looker Studio connector) match your reporting process before signing a contract.

How to Use AI Mode Tracking Data

Data from an AI visibility tool is most useful when it connects to a specific content or promotion action. A seven-step workflow that produces repeatable, comparable results:

AI visibility tracking data workflow seven steps

  1. Define your entities: List the brand names, product names, category terms, and use cases that buyers use when researching your space.
  2. Build a structured prompt set: Include branded queries (“What is [Brand]?”), category queries (“Best tools for [use case]”), comparison queries (“[Brand] vs. [Competitor]”), problem queries (“How do I fix [problem]?”), and trust queries (“Is [Brand] reliable?”).
  3. Choose engines and fix the location: Select the platforms your audience actually uses. Set country, language, and if possible device to match your audience. Do not change these settings between measurement periods.
  4. Run a baseline and preserve the configuration: Record the exact prompt text, engine, location, date, and plan settings. This is the anchor for all future comparisons.
  5. Review the findings: Note missing mentions, competitor-only prompts, cited domains, specific cited URLs, and sentiment signals.
  6. Map each finding to an action: A missing citation for a category prompt may indicate a content gap. A competitor citation may point to a stronger reference page on their site. A brand mention without a link may benefit from a structured, linkable reference page.
  7. Recheck after a meaningful change: Re-run the same prompt set after publishing a new page, updating an existing one, or earning a new external reference. Treat the result as directional evidence, not a guaranteed outcome.

Build a Repeatable Prompt Set

A prompt set that mixes query types produces more useful data than one that uses only brand name queries.

Prompt typeExampleWhat it reveals
Branded“What is [Brand] used for?”Direct brand recognition and description accuracy
Category“Best AI visibility tools for small teams”Category share of voice and competitor presence
Comparison“[Brand] vs. [Competitor]”How AI frames competitive differences
Alternatives“Alternatives to [Competitor]”Whether your brand appears in competitor replacement queries
Problem“How do I track my brand in Google AI Mode?”Discoverability for high-intent buyer questions
Trust“Is [Brand] worth the cost?”Sentiment and citation quality around credibility queries
Local“Best [category] tools in [city or region]”Geographic visibility gaps

Preserve the exact wording of every prompt. Changing even a few words between measurement periods makes the comparison unreliable.

Turn Missing Citations Into Content Actions

A missing citation is a data signal, not a verdict.

Multiple causes are possible: the content may be thin or unstructured, the page may have crawlability issues, the AI may prefer a more authoritative external source, the prompt wording may not match your content, or the result may simply reflect normal AI response volatility.

FindingPossible interpretationSuggested next action
Competitor cited but brand not mentionedCompetitor’s page may be more authoritative or structuredAudit the cited competitor page and identify content gaps
Brand mentioned but no URL citedAI recognizes the brand but has no clear page to linkCreate or improve a focused reference or landing page
No mention on a problem promptContent may not address the query directlyAdd a direct answer section to a relevant page
Citation drops after content changeEdit may have removed a key signalReview removed sections and restore structured answers
Consistent citation on trust promptsStrong content quality signalUse this page as a model for other content updates

Do not claim that any single content change caused a citation to appear or disappear. AI responses are variable, and a single observation is not a controlled experiment.

Free and Low-Cost Ways to Monitor AI Mode Visibility

Not every team is ready to invest in a dedicated AI search visibility tool. Several lower-cost or no-cost options can establish a useful baseline:

MethodWhat it providesWhat it cannot measure
Google Search Console generative AI reportImpressions by page, country, device, and date for AI Overviews and AI Mode (rolled out globally August 31, 2026 per Google Search Central)Click data, specific prompt queries, cross-platform visibility, competitor mentions
Manual prompt checksDirect observation of AI answers for your defined promptsConsistent history, automation, competitor data at scale
Spreadsheet trackingRepeatable log of manual checks with date, prompt, platform, and resultAnalysis at scale; requires significant manual time investment
GA4 / server log reviewTraffic from AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity referrals) and AI bot crawlability (GPTBot, PerplexityBot)Prompts where no click occurred, brand mentions without referral traffic

Google’s generative AI performance report is a meaningful free starting point. It shows which of your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by country and device.

It does not show click data, the prompts that triggered the impression, or how your brand compares to competitors. For cross-platform visibility and prompt-level citation data, a dedicated tool remains necessary.

Common Mistakes You Should Avoid When Tracking AI Search Visibility

AI visibility data is easy to misread if you apply traditional rank-tracking assumptions to it.

  1. Changing prompt wording between measurement periods: A single word change can produce a completely different AI answer. Lock the exact text before your first measurement run.
  2. Comparing results from different locations: AI engines personalize answers by country, language, and sometimes account. Always use the same location and language settings.
  3. Treating one AI answer as a fixed ranking: AI responses are probabilistic and change between runs. One observation is not a position. Repeated sampling produces more reliable directional evidence.
  4. Confusing a brand mention with a citation: A mention is a text reference. A citation is a linked URL. They have different implications for traffic and content strategy.
  5. Monitoring only one AI engine: Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity produce different results for the same prompt. Relying on one engine creates a blind spot.
  6. Ignoring plan-level limits: A tool with 15 prompts per month and no Google AI Mode at the entry tier is not the same product as its pricing page may imply. Read every plan restriction carefully.
  7. Quoting stale prices or feature availability: Pricing and platform coverage in this category change frequently. The October, 2026 check date applies only to what was confirmed that day.
  8. Assuming AI visibility equals traffic or revenue: AI citations can drive referral traffic, but the relationship is not guaranteed. A mention without a link may produce zero referral visits.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Mode Trackers

What is an AI Mode tracker?

An AI Mode tracker is a tool that runs repeatable prompts through Google AI Mode and other answer engines to record brand mentions, cited URLs, competitor presence, and related metrics. It is distinct from a traditional keyword rank tracker, which measures position on standard search results pages.

Can Google Search Console track Google AI Mode?

Yes. Google launched dedicated generative AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026, rolled out globally on August 31, 2026, covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. The report shows impressions, pages, countries, and devices, but does not include click data or the specific prompts that triggered impressions.

What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

Google AI Mode is a dedicated conversational search tab that supports multi-turn dialogue. Google AI Overviews are brief AI summaries embedded at the top of standard search results. They are separate surfaces and a tool that tracks one may not track the other. Require separate confirmation from any vendor.

Which AI platforms should I monitor?

Start with the platforms your target audience actually uses for research. For most U.S. teams, that means Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Add Gemini and Microsoft Copilot if your audience or buyer data supports their use in your category.

Do AI visibility tools track exact prompts?

Some do and some do not. Custom prompt execution runs your exact query through the AI engine on a schedule. Shared or modeled indexes estimate visibility from a predefined prompt set. Custom prompt execution is more useful for repeatable measurement tied to your specific buyer questions.

Can an AI visibility tracker show cited URLs?

This capability is plan and vendor dependent. Several tools on this list, including Semrush, Peec AI, and Keyword.com, document cited URL tracking. Verify the specific plan required and confirm on the official product page before purchasing.

Are AI visibility tools accurate?

No independent benchmark exists to rank vendors by accuracy. AI responses are probabilistic and vary between runs, locations, and devices. Tools that run repeated prompt executions and report aggregated results are more reliable than single-run snapshots. Transparency about methodology matters more than vendor accuracy claims.

Do AI visibility tools replace SEO rank trackers?

No. They answer different questions. Traditional rank trackers measure position on standard search result pages. AI visibility tools measure brand presence inside generated AI answers. Both measurement layers are needed for a complete picture of search visibility in 2026.

What is the best AI visibility tool for a small team?

For most bloggers and small teams, OtterlyAI’s $29 entry plan is the lowest-friction starting point, noting that Google AI Mode requires an add-on. SE Ranking AI Search is a strong alternative for teams already using SE Ranking for traditional SEO tracking.

Final Recommendations and Next Steps

Use this decision framework to match a tool to your situation:

  • Start simple: Choose OtterlyAI or SE Ranking when the priority is an accessible baseline with Google AI Mode coverage and your prompt volume is under 100 per month.
  • Stay in your ecosystem: Choose Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit or Ahrefs Brand Radar when you already pay for that platform and want AI visibility data in the same workflow.
  • Combine SERP and AI tracking: Choose SE Ranking (AI Search add-on) or Keyword.com when your workflow depends on traditional rank data and AI visibility in one reporting tool.
  • Scale for agencies or enterprise: Choose Peec AI or Profound when multi-project workflows, source analysis, or enterprise reporting requirements justify the added complexity and cost.

30-day pilot checklist:

  • Select 10 to 15 prompts across branded, category, comparison, and problem query types
  • Choose three or four engines relevant to your audience
  • Record exact prompt text, engine, country, language, and date
  • Run a baseline and export or screenshot the results
  • Identify the top three competitor-only prompts and the top three pages cited for your brand
  • Make one evidence-based content update based on the gap analysis
  • Re-run the same prompt set after the update to collect directional evidence

If you have only a small number of informational pages, no defined buyer prompts, or no capacity to act on citation data yet, Google Search Console’s generative AI report and manual prompt checks are enough to start.
